Run With Her: A Morning in Bukit Damansara

There's a version of exercising alone that a lot of women know well — lacing up, stepping out, and hoping nobody's watching too closely. Her Routine started because a few women got tired of that version.

It began small — a few personal workouts shared online, nothing organized. Then the messages started coming in: other women saying they wanted to move too, but didn't want to do it alone. That response became Her Routine, a wellness community built specifically around women showing up for each other.

This past Saturday, that idea took the shape of a 3km coffee run through Bukit Damansara, hosted with Ohaiyo Kohi - Run With Her, hill edition. No fees, no pressure, girls only, meet at the cafe at 7:30am.

We found out about it almost by accident. A conversation with Marcus, who runs Ohaiyo, led to an introduction, and the invitation to come along was extended with the kind of casualness that tells you a community already trusts itself. We joined late in the planning, without much of a plan of our own - just a few pieces of EQL activewear and genuine curiosity about what this group had built.

What we found was a morning that didn't need us to make it work. Women stretching in a parking lot before sunrise properly broke through the clouds. A stretch of road lined with trees, punctuated by laughter loud enough to carry down the block. A finish line that turned into thirty-some people crowding together for one photo, banners from both Her Routine and Ohaiyo held up like it mattered that people knew who made the morning happen.

Somewhere in the middle of the run, it became clear why this group has grown the way it has. Nobody was performing effort. Nobody was competing for pace. The energy wasn't about the run being hard - it was about nobody having to do it by themselves.

Afterward, the group headed back to Ohaiyo for coffee and pastries, runners getting a small discount as thanks for showing up. It's a small gesture, but it fits the whole morning: quiet generosity, no theatrics, just people taking care of each other in ordinary, practical ways.

We came to document, and ended up just being glad to stand at the edge of it. Her Routine didn't need our activewear to prove anything about discipline or community — that part was already built, long before Saturday. What we got to do was witness it, and maybe, in some small way, be trusted enough to be let in.

If you're a woman in KL who's been putting off moving because you didn't want to do it alone, Her Routine might be worth a follow. There's always another run coming.
